Decimals worksheets — what parents ask

Every decimal is a fraction with a denominator that is a power of 10. 0.3 = 3/10. 0.47 = 47/100. 0.125 = 125/1000. Children who see this connection understand why decimal rules work, rather than memorising them separately from fraction rules. CBSE Class 5 introduces decimals as an extension of fractions — the link is explicit in the curriculum, but often lost in practice.
Adding without aligning decimal points causes digit errors — tenths get added to hundredths, giving a wrong answer. The decimal point marks the boundary between whole and fractional parts. Adding trailing zeros first (3.4 + 0.56 becomes 3.40 + 0.56) fills every column so alignment is visual and errors become obvious.
Writing 0.19 > 0.9 because 19 > 9. The fix: compare place by place from left to right. 0.9 = 0.90. In the tenths place: 9 > 1. So 0.9 > 0.19. The digit count does not determine size — the place value of each digit does. Medium difficulty worksheets include ordering problems that specifically target this misconception.
Class 5 covers reading, writing, comparing and basic addition and subtraction of decimals up to 2 decimal places. Class 6 extends to multiplication of decimals by whole numbers and powers of 10, and division of a decimal by a whole number. Because our number system is base-10. Each place value position is 10 times the position to its right. Moving the decimal one place right multiplies by 10 (3.4 → 34.0). Moving it left divides by 10 (3.4 → 0.34). This is a consequence of how place value works, not a trick — understanding it means you never need to memorise the rule separately for each power of 10.
Count the total decimal places in the factors and verify the answer has the same number. 0.4 × 0.3: one decimal place plus one decimal place = two decimal places, so the answer must be 0.12, not 1.2 or 0.012. This quick check catches the most common error in decimal multiplication — misplacing the decimal point — before the answer is written.
