The ratio–fraction connection

Students often treat ratio and fractions as unrelated topics — but the fraction 3/7 and the ratio 3:4 (with a total of 7) describe the same numerical situation. Fluency in both notations, and the ability to switch between them depending on what a problem asks, is the standard expected by Class 6 CBSE assessments. Ratio worksheets — what parents ask

A fraction represents a part out of a whole: 3/5 means 3 parts out of a total of 5. A ratio represents a relationship between two separate quantities: 3:5 means for every 3 of one thing there are 5 of another, giving 8 total. A ratio of boys to girls of 3:5 does not mean 3 out of every 5 students are boys — it means 3 boys for every 5 girls, with 8 students in each group. This distinction confuses Class 6 students who have recently studied fractions.
Divide all parts of the ratio by their HCF. 12:18 — the HCF is 6 — simplifies to 2:3. For three-part ratios: 6:9:12 — divide all by 3 — gives 2:3:4. A ratio is in simplest form when no integer greater than 1 divides all parts evenly. Unlike fractions, simplifying a ratio does not change it to a fraction — it remains a comparison between quantities.
A proportion is a statement that two ratios are equal: 2:3 = 4:6. To test, cross-multiply: if a/b = c/d, then a×d must equal b×c. For 2:3 and 4:6: 2×6=12 and 3×4=12 — equal, so they are proportional. Proportional reasoning — using a known ratio to find an unknown value — is the core skill of CBSE Class 6 ratio work and the foundation of Class 7 direct proportion.
CBSE Class 6 Chapter 12 introduces the ratio concept — comparing two quantities, simplifying ratios, and finding equivalent ratios. Class 7 extends to direct proportion (as one quantity increases, the other increases by the same factor) and inverse proportion. Class 8 covers rates and percentages as applications of ratio. The Grade 6 ratio worksheets target Class 6 scope with hard difficulty extending to Class 7 proportion problems.
