When CBSE introduces each times table

The NCERT syllabus has a specific sequence for multiplication. Practising at the right level for the right class prevents both gaps and unnecessary pressure.

Class 2 — 2×, 5×, 10×

The first three tables are chosen because they have the clearest patterns. 2× (skip counting by 2), 5× (skip counting by 5, clock patterns), 10× (place value pattern). These are the concrete foundation for everything that follows.

Class 3 — Full 1×–10× expected

By the end of Class 3, CBSE expects students to be fluent up to 10×10. Class 3 also introduces the relationship between multiplication and division — students who only memorised tables without understanding this link struggle immediately.

Class 4–5 — Application, not new tables

Classes 4 and 5 use the already-learned tables in new contexts: long multiplication, long division, fraction operations, and area calculations. By Class 5, table facts should be fully automatic — no hesitation, no counting up.

Times tables — what parents ask

Memorisation is retrieving a stored answer: '7×8 = 56' recalled as a fact. Fluency is understanding why: '7 groups of 8 equal 56' — and being able to derive it if the memory fails, apply it to division (56÷8=7), and use it in fractions (7/8 × 8 = 7). CBSE assessments test application, not recall — which is why children who only memorise often fail word problems and fractions even when they know their tables.
Class 2 introduces the 2, 5, and 10 times tables. Class 3 expects fluency up to 10×10. Class 4 introduces multiplying 2-digit numbers using the tables already learned. Class 5 expects tables to be automatic — they are used without thinking in fraction, decimal, and area calculations.
Not for practice intended to build fluency. The purpose of times tables practice is to make multiplication automatic so mental bandwidth is available for higher-level reasoning. A child who has to reach for a calculator for 6×7 is using cognitive resources for recall that should be available for the maths problem they're actually solving.
With 10 focused minutes of daily practice, most children achieve 10×10 fluency in 8–12 weeks from a cold start. The 2s, 5s, and 10s are usually secured in the first 2 weeks. The 3s, 4s, and 6s in weeks 3–6. The 7s, 8s, and 9s (the hardest for most children) in weeks 7–12.
Two techniques work well. First, isolate the facts that keep failing and practise only those — not the whole table — for a week. If 7×8 keeps slipping, practise only 7×8 and its inverse 8×7 for 5 minutes daily until it's automatic before returning to the full table. Second, use the commutativity link: 7×8 = 8×7. Many children who fail '7 times 8' remember '8 times 7' because they met it in a different context.
Timed practice is helpful once the table is already learned — it builds the speed that makes facts automatic in context. It is harmful when used before fluency is established, because time pressure triggers anxiety and the child practises retrieving under stress, not retrieving fluently. Introduce timing only after a child can answer correctly without a clock — not as the method of learning.
