Why daily beats weekly — the spacing effect

Educational research on the spacing effect is consistent across decades and age groups: material encountered repeatedly over distributed intervals is retained far better than the same material studied in a single block. For maths fluency specifically, this means a child who practises multiplication for 10 minutes each day will outperform a child who practises for 70 minutes once a week — with the same total practice time.

The reason: each daily session retrieves information from memory before it fully fades, strengthening the retrieval pathway. The weekly session, by contrast, starts from near-zero each time and must re-establish what was already learned. Daily practice also catches errors within 24 hours before they become ingrained habits.

The 10-minute structure that works

  • Minutes 0–1: Open the practice (no choosing or setup — have the default topic ready). The first 60 seconds should involve no decision-making by the child.
  • Minutes 1–8: Focused practice — 15 to 20 problems depending on speed. The child works independently without input.
  • Minutes 8–10: Review: child checks answers (via answer key or QR scan) and notes anything they got wrong without correction — just awareness.

The two-minute review is as important as the eight minutes of practice. Without it, mistakes are practised as many times as correct answers. With it, the child ends each session with an accurate picture of their current level.

Keeping it going through school term pressure

The routine breaks down most often at two points: during exam season (when everything feels urgent) and during light school periods (when it seems unnecessary). Ironically, both are wrong. During exams, short daily practice of fundamentals reduces anxiety better than cramming. During easy patches, maintaining the habit costs almost nothing and preserves the neural pathways built during harder practice phases.

The simplest protection: decide in advance that exam weeks are 5-minute sessions, not zero-minute sessions. This keeps the habit alive without adding stress.

What to practise — topic rotation vs adaptive

Topic rotation (assigning a specific topic to each day of the week) is lower overhead and works well when a child is at grade level. Adaptive practice (letting the system choose based on recent performance) is more efficient when a child has uneven skills — the system naturally spends more time on weak areas. Most parents find adaptive practice easier to sustain long-term because it requires no planning.
