How to Identify Maths Learning Gapsin Your Child — Before They Widen

A maths learning gap is not the same as not liking maths. It's a missing concept that blocks everything built on top of it. The earlier it's found, the faster it's fixed — but most gaps go unnoticed until exam time.

What a gap looks like vs. what a bad day looks like

A learning gap is not a general difficulty with maths — it's a specific missing concept that creates a predictable failure pattern. A child with a gap will consistently fail at a particular problem type regardless of how much time they've had or how rested they are. A child having a bad day fails randomly across different problem types.

The simplest test: give the child the same type of problem three days in a row. If they fail it consistently, the concept is missing. If the errors are scattered, it's attention or practice volume.

Grade-specific warning signs

Class 1–2: Cannot add two 2-digit numbers without counting on fingers past Class 2. Does not recognise that addition and subtraction undo each other. Skips place value — thinks 23 is "two and three" not "twenty and three."

Class 3–4: Knows times tables by rote but cannot apply them to division ("What's 42 ÷ 7?" produces a blank even though 7×6 is known). Cannot carry in multiplication beyond single-digit multipliers. Treats fractions as separate numbers rather than parts of a whole ("one-half" is not understood as 1 out of 2 equal parts).

Class 5: Cannot add fractions with different denominators because the concept of equivalent fractions was never fully understood. Confuses decimal place value — 0.3 is thought to be larger than 0.25 because 3 > 25. Cannot convert between fractions and decimals without a formula to memorise.

How to surface a gap without a formal test

  • Give 5 questions of the same type and watch how they solve, not just whether they get the right answer. A child who arrives at the correct answer through a workaround (counting on fingers for multiplication, adding the fraction twice instead of multiplying) has a gap in the underlying concept.
  • Ask them to explain what they did. A child who understands can explain it. A child who memorised a procedure will either go silent or recite the steps without being able to say why.
  • Change the problem format. If they can do 7 × 8 but not "There are 7 rows of 8 chairs. How many chairs in total?" — the multiplication fact is memorised but the multiplication concept (repeated groups) is not internalised.

What to do once you've found the gap

Go back one level before the gap, not to the gap itself. If the gap is in multiplying 2-digit numbers, start with single-digit multiplication to ensure the conceptual foundation is solid before rebuilding the procedure. Fill the preceding concept first, then return to the gap topic. Most gaps take 2–3 weeks of consistent short practice to close when addressed at the right level.

Parents' questions about learning gaps

A gap shows a consistent pattern: the child gets the same type of problem wrong across multiple sessions, avoids a specific topic, or shows sudden difficulty at a transition point (e.g. starting Class 4 after managing well through Class 3). A bad day produces random errors across different problem types. If the same operation or concept keeps failing, it's a gap.
If a gap has persisted for more than 4–6 weeks of targeted practice at home without improvement, or if the child is now more than one class level behind on a foundational topic (e.g. a Class 5 child still struggling with basic multiplication), structured intervention from a tutor or remediation programme is more efficient than parent-led practice alone.
