Subtraction isn't just 'take away'.
Here's what the other types look like.

Children who only see take-away subtraction problems struggle the moment a word problem asks for the difference between two quantities or asks what a starting number was. All three structures are in these worksheets.

Take-away (Whole – Part = Part)

'Meera had 14 sweets. She ate 5. How many are left?' This is the classic and most familiar subtraction structure. The whole is known, one part is removed, and the remaining part is unknown. Easy difficulty problems use this type exclusively.

Comparison (How many more/fewer?)

'Rohan has 12 stickers. Priya has 8 stickers. How many more stickers does Rohan have?' Both quantities are known; the unknown is the gap between them. This requires subtraction but uses no take-away language — the hardest type for many children.

Missing addend (What was the start?)

'Kavya had some books. She lent 4 to a friend and now has 9. How many did she start with?' The unknown is a starting value that was reduced. Children can solve this by adding up (9 + 4) or by subtracting (? − 4 = 9).

Grade-by-grade guide (CBSE)

Class 1–2: Take-away problems within 99. Students write a subtraction sentence and state the unit. Borrowing introduced in Class 2 problems.

Class 3: 3-digit and 4-digit take-away problems. Introduction of 'how many more / fewer' comparison problems. Two-step problems begin.

Subtraction word problems — what parents ask

'Fewer' is used with countable things ('Ravi has 3 fewer pencils than Maya'), while 'less than' is used with uncountable quantities ('This bottle holds 200ml less than that one'). In practice, both signal a comparison that often requires subtraction — but the more important skill is identifying what is unknown: the smaller quantity, the larger quantity, or the difference between them. The signal word alone doesn't determine the operation.
A missing-addend problem gives the whole and one part and asks for the other part: 'Priya had some marbles. She gave away 7 and has 11 left. How many did she start with?' Mathematically this is 11 + 7 = ?, or equivalently ? - 7 = 11. Young children often solve these by counting up rather than subtracting — both are valid strategies. The subtraction worksheet at medium difficulty includes this type.
Comparison problems use language like 'more than' and 'fewer than' which many children associate reflexively with a particular operation. 'Aarav has 5 more than Priya' triggers 'add 5' — but if the problem asks for Priya's count, you subtract. The solution is to teach students to identify what the problem is asking for (the larger quantity? the smaller? the difference?) rather than to react to signal words.
Class 1 introduces take-away subtraction within 20. Class 2 extends to 2-digit subtraction with and without borrowing. Class 3 reaches 3-digit and 4-digit subtraction problems. Class 4–5 includes comparison problems ('How many more?', 'How many fewer?') and two-step problems that combine subtraction with addition or multiplication.
Yes, and the check method matters. For take-away problems: add the answer back to what was subtracted — if you get the starting number, it's correct. For comparison problems: add the smaller quantity and the difference — if you get the larger quantity, it's correct. Teaching students which check method applies to which problem type is itself a valuable comprehension exercise.
Use a physical demonstration: line up 8 counters next to 5 counters, remove the matching pairs until only extras remain — those extras are the difference. 'Difference' in everyday English means 'how they are unlike'; in maths it specifically means 'how far apart two numbers are on the number line.' Once students visualise the gap between two quantities, the word becomes intuitive rather than abstract.
