The composite shape challenge

Composite shape problems — where an L-shaped or irregular figure must be split into rectangles before the area can be found — are the most common source of lost marks in Class 7–8 geometry assessments. The key skill is recognising where to draw the dividing line and labelling the resulting rectangles with their correct dimensions. Hard difficulty worksheets provide these problems with partial labelling, requiring students to derive missing side lengths from the overall shape dimensions before calculating.

Geometry worksheets — what parents ask

Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a shape — all sides added together. Area is the amount of surface inside the shape. Both are 'measures' of a shape, which causes confusion. Memory hook: Perimeter = Path around the outside (both start with P). Area = Amount inside (measured in square units). These worksheets deliberately mix perimeter and area questions in a single set to force students to read each problem carefully before choosing the formula.
A square: perimeter = 4 × side (all four sides equal). A rectangle: perimeter = 2 × (length + width) because opposite sides are equal but adjacent sides differ. A common error is applying the square formula to a rectangle. Hard worksheets include problems where only some side lengths are given — students must use the shape's properties to find the missing side before calculating the perimeter.
Every rectangle can be divided into unit squares. If the base is 5 units and the height is 3 units, the rectangle contains exactly 5 × 3 = 15 unit squares. Area answers 'how many unit squares fit inside?' The formula is a shortcut for counting. This understanding matters because the same 'base × height' reasoning underlies the triangle area formula (base × height ÷ 2) and the parallelogram formula — not three separate rules to memorise.
Class 6: types of angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, perimeter and area of rectangles and squares. Class 7: properties of triangles (angle sum, congruence), parallel lines, perimeter and area including triangles and parallelograms, construction with compass and ruler. Class 8: quadrilaterals, circles, area of trapezoids and polygons. The Grade 7–8 geometry worksheets focus on Class 7 perimeter and area — the most heavily tested sub-topic — with extensions to Class 8 composite shapes in hard difficulty.
Use the shape's properties. Rectangle with one side 8 cm and perimeter 28 cm: 2(8 + w) = 28 → w = 6 cm. Equilateral triangle with perimeter 24 cm: each side = 24 ÷ 3 = 8 cm. Triangle with two equal sides and perimeter 31 cm, where the base is 7 cm: each equal side = (31 − 7) ÷ 2 = 12 cm. Hard difficulty worksheets include problems where deriving a missing side is the first and most important step.
