Word problems set in rupees, kilometres, and familiar Indian scenarios are easier for CBSE students to parse than dollar-based or foreign-context problems. It reduces cognitive load and lets the child focus on the maths, not the setting.

The single most important factor

After analysing which apps Indian parents report their children actually using consistently, the clearest predictor is not content quality — it's friction to start a session. Apps that require opening, logging in, navigating a menu, and selecting a topic before reaching the first question have measurably lower daily usage rates than apps where the first question appears within two taps. For a Grade 3 child who would rather not do maths, two extra taps is a meaningful barrier.

What parents want to know

Genuine CBSE alignment means the app covers topics in the order and depth specified by the NCERT textbook for that class — not just that it includes 'fractions' at some point. For Class 4, that means multiplication of large numbers before fractions; for Class 5, it means fractions before decimals. An app that uses a generic global Grade 4 sequence is not truly CBSE-aligned even if it says so.
This varies by app. Most apps that offer meaningful progress tracking require a parent or child account. Zestmath's practice works without any account; however, progress is session-based and doesn't persist across sessions unless you create a free account.
Grade 3: multiplication tables up to 10×10, division as sharing and grouping, introduction to fractions. Grade 4: long multiplication, long division, equivalent fractions. Grade 5: fractions with unlike denominators, decimals to hundredths, area and perimeter. These form the procedural backbone that Class 6 onwards builds on.
Khan Academy's content is high quality and most of Grade 3–5 mathematics overlaps between Common Core (US) and CBSE. The main differences are topic sequencing and contextual examples. Khan Academy is a strong supplement but does not follow CBSE chapter ordering, which can cause confusion during exam preparation.
At Class 3 level, look for: strong times-tables practice (2–10), division as sharing and grouping with visual models, and word problems that use Indian context (rupees, metres). Avoid apps that rush to abstract notation before building concrete understanding — Class 3 is the critical year for multiplication concept formation.
Most paediatric recommendations suggest 15–20 minutes of educational screen time per subject per day for primary students. For maths apps specifically, 10–15 focused minutes produces better retention than 45 unfocused minutes. The key is deliberate practice — actively solving problems — not passive watching.
