Multiplying & Dividing Fractions

Learn the surprisingly simple rules for multiplying and dividing fractions — no common denominators needed!

Multiplying Fractions

Rule: Multiply top × top, then bottom × bottom. That's it!

⅔ × ¾ = 6/12 = ½

2×3=6 (top) · 3×4=12 (bottom) · simplify

3 × ¼ = 3/4

Write 3 as 3/1, then 3×1=3 · 1×4=4

Shortcut: Cross-simplify before multiplying to keep numbers small. E.g. 4/9 × 3/8 → simplify 4 and 8 (÷4) and 3 and 9 (÷3) first → 1/3 × 1/2 = 1/6.

Dividing Fractions — Keep · Change · Flip

To divide fractions: Keep the first fraction, Change ÷ to ×, Flip the second fraction (use its reciprocal).

½ ÷ ¾

  1. Keep first: ½
  2. Change ÷ to ×
  3. Flip second: ¾ → 4/3
  4. Multiply: ½ × 4/3 = 4/6 =
⅓ ÷ ½= ⅓ × 2 = ⅔
¾ ÷ 3= ¾ × ⅓ = 3/12 = ¼
2/5 ÷ 4/5= 2/5 × 5/4 = 10/20 = ½
