2-Digit Subtraction
Subtract two-digit numbers using column subtraction — with and without borrowing (regrouping).
Without Borrowing
When the top ones digit is bigger than or equal to the bottom — simply subtract each column.
5 9
− 3 4
2 5
Step 1 — Ones: 9 − 4 = 5. Write 5.
Step 2 — Tens: 5 − 3 = 2. Write 2.
Answer: 25
With Borrowing (Regrouping)
When the top ones digit is smaller — borrow 10 from the tens column.
− 2 8
2 4
Step 1 — Ones: 2 < 8, so borrow. 10+2=12, then 12−8=4. Write 4.
Step 2 — Tens: 5 became 4 (after borrowing). 4−2=2. Write 2.
Answer: 24
Practice — 2-Digit Subtraction
