The 3 Times Table
Complete 3 Times Table:
- 3 × 1 = 3
- 3 × 2 = 6
- 3 × 3 = 9
- 3 × 4 = 12
- 3 × 5 = 15
- 3 × 6 = 18
- 3 × 7 = 21
- 3 × 8 = 24
- 3 × 9 = 27
- 3 × 10 = 30
- 3 × 11 = 33
- 3 × 12 = 36
Pattern & Tricks:
- Skip Count by 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30...
- Digit Sum Rule: Add the digits of any answer and they equal 3, 6, or 9! (27: 2+7=9 ✓)
- Pattern Recognition: Last digits repeat: 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0
- Use 2× Table: If you know 2×7=14, then 3×7 = 14+7 = 21
Finger Trick:
Hold out your hands. For 3×4, count to the 4th finger. Fingers before it (3) = tens place. Fingers after it (6) need adjustment, but this works for visual learners!
Teaching the 3 Times Table
The 3 times table is usually the third multiplication table students learn (after 2s and 10s or 5s). Unlike the 2 times table which is just doubling, the 3 times table requires actual skip counting or repeated addition.
Start with Skip Counting
Have students practice counting by 3s out loud: "3, 6, 9, 12, 15..." This rhythm helps memorization. Try it while jumping, clapping, or bouncing a ball for kinesthetic learning.
Use Repeated Addition
Show that 3×5 means "3+3+3+3+3" (five 3s). Draw 5 groups of 3 objects. This concrete representation helps students understand what multiplication means before memorizing facts.

Triangles have 3 sides. Tricycles have 3 wheels. If we have 4 tricycles, how many wheels total? (3×4=12)
