Frequently Asked Questions

What are signal words in math?
Words or phrases in a word problem that indicate which operation to use — e.g., "total" signals addition, "left" signals subtraction, "each" often signals multiplication, and "shared equally" signals division.
How do I know if a word problem is multiplication or division?
Look for whether you're combining equal groups (multiply) or splitting a total into equal groups (divide). "Per," "each," and "groups of" are common cues, but context matters — see the Per Trap below.
What does "per" mean in a word problem?
"Per" almost always signals a rate. When you're finding the rate (miles per hour = total ÷ hours), you divide. When you're applying a known rate (3 miles per lap × 4 laps), you multiply. This is the single most-missed signal word — covered in depth in the full pack.
